It happens every year. Summer slows down, and then slips away. The end of summer can be the sweetest part of summer. The rushing around, the trying-to-fit-it-all in of early summer is done. Now it’s time to slow down and savor. Savor the ripe vegetables and fruits, the still warm lazy afternoons reading to your children who are blissfully at home. Well hmmm… yes, that might be part of it, and then there is REALITY.
Every year, at the end of summer, after the buses departed, the mother’s of Ashfield, MA. gathered for a cup of coffee on the front porch of Elmer’s for “Mother’s Liberation Day” (aka the first day of school).
It was a rowdy, raucous, celebratory occasion with high fives all around. Success was written all over our faces. We’d done it again. Given our kids a special memory-filled summer, and now it was over. Sure, we were wistful, but we had a little more time to do other things. We would take turns shouting the one thing that was on the top on our list; Ella screamed “paint”, Shelly proclaimed “nap” and on and on it went. Soon someone said wistfully “yoga”.
